Small business SEO: what rebuilding a one-product website taught us

Small business SEO doesn’t have to be complicated. This autumn we rebuilt the MagnetoMesh website, a Romanian shop that sells one product: a magnetic insect screen for doors. Here’s what we changed, what actually moved the needle, and what we’d tell any small business owner thinking about doing the same.

Where we started

The site had good bones but years of patches on top. Pages loaded slowly on mobile, a banner still claimed the product was out of stock, and a handful of old competition posts were competing with the pages that actually sell. In Google’s Lighthouse test, the homepage scored 66 for mobile performance, and the main image took 3.6 seconds to appear.

Small business SEO results: mobile performance score up from 66 to 97

Small business SEO starts with the page that sells

With a single product, the homepage is the shop. So we rebuilt it as one clear sales page: what the screen does, how it’s fitted, the three colours, the price, delivery and returns, and the order form, in that order. Every section answers a question a buyer would genuinely ask.

  • One main heading that says exactly what the product is.
  • Real customer reviews instead of vague claims.
  • Delivery, payment and returns spelled out right next to the order form.
  • A short FAQ built from the questions people ring up about.

Speed is a ranking signal and a sales tool

Next, we tidied up the technical side. We switched to a single, locally hosted font, held back non-essential JavaScript until the visitor interacts, lazy-loaded images further down the page and gave every image fixed dimensions. We also stopped the YouTube player from loading until someone actually presses play.

The result? Mobile performance went from 66 to 97 in Lighthouse, the largest contentful paint dropped from 3.6 to 2.1 seconds, and layout shift fell from 0.123 to almost nothing. Visitors notice that straight away, and so does Google.

Structure that search engines can read

We added Product structured data with the price, stock status, delivery cost and the 14-day returns policy, plus FAQ markup for the questions on the page. Old URLs that no longer made sense now redirect permanently rather than breaking, and the sitemap is listed in robots.txt so crawlers can find everything.

Content that earns its place

Finally, we replaced thin, outdated posts with genuinely useful guides: how to measure a door, how to fit a screen on a uPVC frame, how to keep mosquitoes away from children, and so on. Each guide links to the next logical step, so readers and crawlers can move through the site naturally. Our step-by-step fitting guide (in Romanian) is a good example.

What we’d tell other small businesses

  • Fix what customers see first. Wrong prices, stale stock messages and broken pages cost sales long before they cost rankings.
  • Test on a mid-range phone, not just on the office computer.
  • Write for the questions people actually ask, then link those answers together.
  • Measure before and after, so you know what really worked.

If you’re based in the UK and would rather hand this kind of work to specialists, a London SEO agency such as SEO Arrow can audit your site, plan the fixes and handle the technical side, so you can get on with running the business.
