Kitesurfing in Hurghada: how to keep mosquitoes out of your room

Kitesurfing in Hurghada is hard to beat: steady wind, warm water and a long season. What nobody mentions in the brochure is the high-pitched buzz by your ear once the sun goes down. After a full day on the water, the last thing you want is a night of mosquito bites, so here’s how to keep them out of your room without spoiling the trip.

Why Hurghada is so good for kitesurfing

The Red Sea coast gets reliable wind for much of the year, and the shallow lagoons north of the town are ideal for learning. Sultan Kite School, for instance, runs its station at Palma Resort on a wide, flat-water lagoon between Hurghada and El Gouna, which makes first lessons and early progress far less daunting. If you’re planning a trip, their guide to kitesurfing in Hurghada covers lessons, rental, storage and kite safaris.

Mosquitoes on a Red Sea holiday

The coast is dry, but mosquitoes still turn up, especially near gardens, pools and standing water, and mostly from dusk onwards. They’re drawn to light, warmth and the carbon dioxide we breathe out. That’s why an open balcony door with the lights on is practically an invitation.

Simple ways to keep them out

  • Close up before dusk. Shut the doors and windows before you switch the lights on in the evening.
  • Use the air conditioning or a fan. Mosquitoes struggle in cool, moving air.
  • Cover up after sunset. Light, long sleeves are comfortable and make a real difference at dinner.
  • Pack a repellent you trust. Read the label and follow the instructions, particularly for children.
  • Fit a screen on the door. A magnetic door screen lets you keep the balcony door open for air while the insects stay outside.

A screen you can pack in your suitcase

If you’re travelling from Romania, a magnetic screen is light enough to take with you. Ours measures 210 × 98 cm, fits most balcony and terrace doors, and goes up in about five minutes with the self-adhesive strips in the pack, so there’s no drilling. The two halves close on their own thanks to 18 magnets, which means you can walk in from the terrace with your hands full. When you leave, it peels off and folds back into its bag.

For fitting tips, have a look at our guide to fitting a screen on a uPVC door (in Romanian).

Kitesurfing Hurghada checklist

  • Book lessons with a recognised school, especially if you’re a beginner.
  • Bring high-factor sun cream, a hat and sunglasses with a strap.
  • Keep evenings comfortable: doors shut at dusk, and a screen if you fancy the fresh air.
  • Drink plenty of water, because the wind hides how hot it really is.

Get the basics right and your kitesurfing Hurghada trip will be about the wind and the water, not the night-time buzzing.
